Topclad serves a diverse customers within the dredging industry, providing solutions that enhance the durability and functionality of equipment used in some of the most challenging environments. Our clients range from large-scale international dredging operations to smaller, specialized firms, all seeking reliable solutions that can withstand the rigors of their industry. Our expertise in laser cladding technology ensures that their equipment, exposed to highly corrosive and abrasive conditions, receives the best possible protection, enhancing both performance and longevity. For more information about our broader market engagement, visit our Market Segments page.
Dredging equipment and challenges
The dredging industry faces unique challenges due to the constant exposure of equipment to (salt) water, and abrasive materials like sand. This exposure causes significant wear and corrosion, particularly as equipment frequently moves in and out of water, which is more taxing than being submerged continuously. The ability to withstand high levels of debris and to absorb energy from external impact – without damaging the corrosion protection shield – are other important technical requirements for dredging equipment. Components such as hydraulic rods are especially vulnerable, needing robust protective solutions that can withstand these severe conditions.
Laser cladding solutions
The demand for layers that offer both high wear resistance and corrosion protection is paramount in maintaining the functionality and extending the service life of dredging equipment. For the dredging industry, Topclad specifically utilizes the Quarite NR+ and Tardisphere layer, both known for its significant wear and impact resistance. With the application of carbides, the Tardisphere layer is exceptionally suited to withstand the harsh, abrasive conditions typical in dredging, providing the highest protection against external impact, wear, and corrosion.
Unlike traditional HVOF and NiCr coatings, which can crack or erode under stress, the laser-clad layers from Topclad offer superior durability and flexibility. They absorb and disperse the energy from impacts more effectively, ensuring that the equipment remains protected and operational under extreme conditions.
